Chennai: Filing of nominations for the rural local body polls in the nine newly created districts, which will be held in two phases on 6 and 9 October, has started today.
Candidates can file their nominations till 22 September. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be taken up on 23 September and 25 September is the last date to withdraw nomination.
A total of 27,003 posts are to be filled — 140 district panchayat ward members, 1,381 panchayat union ward members for 74 panchayat unions and 22,581 village panchayat ward members posts in 2,901 village panchayats.
State Election Commissioner Palanikumar said the code of conduct would come into immediate effect in the districts of Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi where the polls would be held. In 28 other districts, elections would be held on 9 October for 789 posts in the local bodies, which are lying vacant, said the State Election Commissioner.
The model code of conduct came into effect in these nine districts with the announcement of the polls.
