‘Respiratory ailments are second highest cause of death in India’

Chennai: According to the University of Washington’s Global Burden of Disease study, respiratory disease was the second highest cause of death in India after heart disease, killing one million Indians in a year.

According to a study published in The Lancet Global Health, there were 28.1 million cases of respiratory diseases in India in 1990, which has increased to 55.3 million in recent years. India has 18 per cent of the world’s population but 32 per cent of its respiratory diseases burden.
