7 cops suspended for letting Pollachi case accused to meet kin outside jail

Chennai: Seven personnel of the Salem police have been placed under suspension after they facilitated a meeting of the accused in the Pollachi sexual abuse and extortion case with their family members on their way back to prison from Coimbatore. Videos of the meeting were widely shared on social media platforms.

In violation of protocols meant for escorting undertrials, the Salem police allowed five accused in the Pollachi sexual assault case to meet and interact with their family members for several minutes along the roadside when they were taken back to Salem prison after being produced in a mahila court.

Commissioner of Police, Salem city, Najmul Hoda said, ‘A Deputy Commissioner conducted an inquiry with the personnel who escorted the accused to court. Seven personnel were found at fault, and placed under suspension.’

According to reports, the suspended personnel were special sub-inspector of police Subramaniam, grade 1 police Prabhu, grade 1 police Velkumar, grade 1 police Karthik and constables Rajkumar, Natarajan and Rajesh Kumar, who were part of the escort team.
