Stalin urges Centre to release fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Chennai: Tamilnadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to take steps for the release of two Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on 18 October.

‘Have written to Hon. @DrSJaishankar, urging him to take all necessary steps immediately to release the two Indian fishermen from the trawler capsized by the Sri Lankan navy on October 18 and to trace,’ Stalin tweeted.

Stalin also appealed to the Union minister to find a permanent way to avert such tragedies.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy said on Wednesday that they recovered the body of an Indian fisherman who went missing after the boat he was in along with two others was hit by a naval vessel of the island nation off the northern coast, the second such incident this year.

India had lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka over the death of the four Indian fishermen in the collision between their vessel and the naval craft of the island nation, saying steps should be taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
