TN holds mega vaccine drive, targets second dose

Chennai: The Tamilnadu health department today organised sixth mega Covid vaccination drive across the State with around 50,000 camps.

‘The sixth mega vaccine camp is scheduled to be held at 50,000 centers under the guidance of the Chief Minister M K Stalin,’ Health Minister M Subramanian said and added that the main focus would be on second doses this time.

‘Nearly, 30.43 lakh beneficiaries will be administered the second dose in the sixth mega camp,’ he said.

Subramanian appealed to the people to take the vaccine as the state has adequate doses. He added that with the vaccines available in sufficient numbers, people must take the jab at the earliest. At least one in four people across the state have taken both doses of the vaccine, the Minister added. The State has already vaccinated more than 5.1 crore people with at least one dose of the vaccine but the vaccination process has not been evenly done.

Subramanian said due to back to back festivals, they were not able to conduct the drive last week. He said the Union government has started to provide the State with the required vaccines’ stock without any delay due to the efforts of the DMK government.

Subramanian added that the weekly camp has evoked tremendous response from the public. He said that in the fifth mega vaccination camp, as many as 11 lakh people took the second dose and in the fourth camp, 10 lakh people were vaccinated. He said nearly 30.43 lakh beneficiaries will be administered the second dose in the sixth mega camp.

It may be recalled that the mega drive, which was conducted on Sundays, has been shifted to Saturday this week to vaccinate tipplers and non-vegetarian eaters.

Subramanian had recently said it was a matter of concern that about 57 lakh people who had taken the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine has not taken the second dose so far.

He said the sixth edition of the mega vaccination camp, scheduled to be held on 23 October, would focus on administering the vaccine to those due for the second dose.

‘Chief Minister M K Stalin has advised us to focus on those people who need to receive their second dose. In the fifth edition of the mega vaccination camp 11 lakh people who needed to receive the second dose were benefitted, while in the fourth edition it was 10 lakh’, Subramanian told the media.
