Chennai: Due to increased arrival of stocks and measures by Tamilnadu government, the price of tomato has come down in Chennai.
As against 30 lorries a day, 45 trucks reached the Koyambedu market this morning. The price of tomato, which was Rs 110 per kg at the wholesale market till yesterday, is now Rs 80, sources said.
With tomato prices soaring due to the north east monsoon downpour, the Tamilnadu government has started the process of selling tomatoes between a price range of Rs 85 and Rs 100 per kg through State-run farm fresh outlets in 12 districts including Chennai.
Farmers across Tamil Nadu faced crop losses of at least 50,000 hectares owing to heavy rains last week. As the State braces for three days of heavy rainfall, the government said that it would procure at least 15 metric tonnes of tomatoes every day for sale in a dozen districts, to bring relief to poor consumers.
