Chennai: With Covid-19 cases rising sharply across the country, bankers have requested their customers to visit the branches only if there is an unavoidable need to do so.
‘Most of the services are now available online and at ATM kiosks. Hence, public should avoid coming to banks in person to the maximum possible extent during these challenging times for their safety,’ says a senior officer of a bank in Tiruttani.
He adds: ‘We understand senior citizens and people from rural areas are not very tech savvy to use online services and even ATMs. They may take the help of their family members. At the same time, we notice even youngsters and the educated coming in person to the branch for withdrawl and payments. These can be avoided.’
A banker at Urapakkam says, ‘though we maintain Covid-19 protocols, the situation is scary. People should make use of the online mode as almost all services are available virtually.’ Recently, bank unions had once again requested for a five-day week for branches.
According to the unions, the banking community, being the frontline warriors and in direct contact with the general public, is continuing to do its duties amidst high chances of being infected by the deadly virus.
