Chennai: Nine police personnel, including an Inspector of Kodungaiyur police station, are facing action for allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old law student inside the police station.
Abdul Raheem was stopped at MR Nagar junction as he was seen riding a bicycle around 11.15 pm on 13 January without a mask and he allegedly picked up an argument when police confronted him for wandering beyond 10 pm, violating night lockdown norms.
Since police seized his cycle, Abdul Raheem allegedly verbally abused police personnel after which he was taken to the police station. However, he refused to enter the police station claiming he was not an accused and tried to walk away. When police personnel stopped him, he allegedly attacked them, after which police retaliated and formally arrested him.
Later, Abdul Rahim posted on social media claiming he was allegedly assaulted by the police. He alleged that the police had kicked him and urinated on him. He posted pictures of his injuries. The news went viral.
About 50 law college students and lawyers staged a protest in front of the office of Pulianthope Deputy Commissioner of police demanding action against the two inspectors in connection with the assault on the student.
Meanwhile, taking suo motu cognisance of a media report about the law student being allegedly assaulted by policemen in Chennai, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has called for a detailed report from the authorities.
