TN govt to impose Rs 2,000 fine on shops without Tamil name boards

The Tamil Nadu government informed the Madurai branch of the Madras High Court that the penalty imposed on shops and establishments failing to display Tamil on name boards will be enhanced from Rs 50 to 2,000. The state government submitted that the order would be notified in two weeks.

The court was hearing a contempt petition filed by Thirumurugan, an activist from Ramanathapuram district, over non-compliance with an order passed by the court in 2017 to ensure proper implementation of a Government Order (G.O), which mandates predominant display of the name of all shops and establishments in Tamil.
