Chennai Corporation increases penalties for stray cattle

In an effort to curb the growing problem of stray cattle causing public inconvenience and traffic disruptions within the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation has implemented significant changes to its penalties and impoundment procedures. The recent resolution passed in a council meeting outlines these changes, which aim to discourage cattle owners from allowing their animals to roam freely on the city’s roads. Increased Fines: One of the most prominent changes is the substantial increase in fines imposed on cattle owners who fail to keep their animals under control. The fine has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. This step has been taken as a response to the persistent issues caused by stray cows and buffaloes obstructing both pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Impoundment and Maintenance: Under the supervision of the public health department and traffic inspectors, stray cattle are now being impounded in designated shelters at Pudupet and Perambur, managed by the city corporation. The maintenance charge for these impounded cattle has also seen a significant increase, rising from Rs 200 per day to Rs 1,000 per day. This cost is expected to encourage cattle owners to take more responsibility for their animals and prevent them from straying onto the streets. Repeat Offenders: To further deter cattle owners from allowing their animals to roam freely, the resolution introduces stricter penalties for repeat offenders. If a cattle owner’s animals are caught for the second time, the penalty increases to Rs 10,000.
