Heightened surveillance in city as pneumonia cases increase in China

As concerns grow over the escalating cases of pneumonia in children in China, health authorities in India, particularly the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH), are taking proactive measures to intensify the surveillance of respiratory illnesses. While the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the current focus has shifted to addressing the spread of pneumonia among children, prompting swift action from public health officials. The DPH is spearheading efforts to monitor and track respiratory illnesses among both outpatients and inpatients. This surveillance encompasses a range of respiratory conditions, including Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI), Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI), and Influenza-like Illness (ILI). These categories are crucial indicators in identifying potential outbreaks and ensuring a rapid response to contain the spread of respiratory infections. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. T.S. Selvavinanayagam, the Director of Public Health, has issued a separate communication to key healthcare authorities, including the Director of Medical Education and Research (DME) and the Directors of Medical Health and Rural Health Services (DMS). The directive aims to prompt these institutions to enhance their surveillance measures and promptly report any identified cases of ARI, SARI, ILI, and related respiratory illnesses. The information is to be reported through the Integrated Disease Surveillance-Integrated Health Information Platform portal, facilitating a streamlined and efficient response to potential outbreaks.
