In a move aimed at educating young minds about the rich political heritage of Tamil Nadu, the State’s school education department has taken a significant step by introducing a lesson on former Chief Minister and Dravidian stalwart, M. Karunanidhi, in the Tamil textbook for the upcoming academic year.
As part of the centenary celebrations of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the ruling government announced a year-long series of events and initiatives to pay homage to the party’s founding principles and its illustrious leaders.
Acknowledging the significance of commemorating leaders like Karunanidhi in school textbooks, the school education minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, emphasized the importance of imparting knowledge about the life and contributions of such icons to the younger generation. Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTB&ESC) took proactive steps to expand the curriculum by including a detailed chapter on Karunanidhi in the class 10 textbook.
The newly added chapter provides a comprehensive overview of Karunanidhi’s multifaceted persona, highlighting his pivotal role in various spheres, including oration, political activism, and creative endeavors in cinema, drama, and literature. With detailed descriptions of his work in eleven different fields, the chapter aims to offer students a nuanced understanding of Karunanidhi’s enduring legacy and his profound impact on Tamil Nadu’s socio-political landscape.
Commenting on the significance of incorporating lessons about eminent leaders in school textbooks, a Tamil teacher from a government school emphasized the importance of transcending political divides and fostering a sense of pride and introspection among students about the achievements of their own people. This sentiment underscores the broader objective of the initiative, which is not only to educate but also to inspire future generations to uphold the values of democracy, social justice, and linguistic pride championed by leaders like M. Karunanidhi.
It is worth noting that this initiative builds upon previous efforts to integrate the contributions of leaders like Karunanidhi into the State syllabus. As early as April 2011, the introduction of ‘Samacheer Kalvi’ textbooks included additional reading material about the then DMK leader, underscoring the enduring relevance of his legacy in Tamil Nadu’s educational landscape.
