HC adjourns Jaffer Sadiq’s plea to quash ED arrest

The Madras High Court has adjourned the hearing of a plea by Jaffer Sadiq, an arrested drug kingpin and sacked DMK functionary, seeking to quash the arrest order issued by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in connection with a money laundering allegation.
A division bench comprising Justice MS Ramesh and Justice Sunder Mohan heard the petition filed by Jaffer Sadiq, who argued that the ED failed to produce him before the court within 24 hours of his arrest, thereby seeking relief.
Following the submission, the bench scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 5.
Jaffer Sadiq was apprehended by ED officials from the Chennai zone while he was incarcerated in Tihar Central Prison, New Delhi. He had been previously arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for smuggling pseudoephedrine to Australia and New Zealand.
The ED has registered the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the drug smuggling charges against Sadiq.
