Several neighborhoods in Chennai and its suburbs experienced waterlogging on Tuesday following a few hours of heavy rainfall. Workers from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) promptly began draining stagnated rainwater and sewage from major roads and interior streets, easing traffic and mobility concerns.
Ennore and Pallikaranai reported the highest rainfall, recording 7 cm each.
Taramani followed with 6 cm, while Anna University recorded 5 cm.
Other parts of the city, including Meenambakkam, Nungambakkam, and YMCA Nandambakkam, reported 4 cm of rainfall each.
Despite receiving moderate to heavy rainfall (less than 10 cm) from Monday night, the city’s infrastructure showed strain. Residents are worried about the potential impact on the city if the weather system intensifies into a cyclone.
The heavy downpour caused widespread flooding in areas such as Perungudi, Velachery, Perambur, Tondiarpet, Tiruvottiyur, Broadway, Ekkattuthangal, Kodambakkam, Anna Salai, Nungambakkam, Mylapore, Alandur, and OMR.
While several roads in Velachery and Perungudi remained waterlogged, a brief break in the rain allowed stormwater drains (SWDs) to function effectively in clearing most of the water. GCC workers utilized tractor pumps to remove any remaining stagnation, ensuring the roads were cleared quickly to prevent further inconvenience.
The GCC continues to monitor the situation, focusing on maintaining stormwater drain efficiency and addressing low-lying areas prone to flooding.
