A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is approaching the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, bringing warnings of heavy rainfall.
According to the Chennai Meteorological Department, 16 districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall today, with “Orange Alert” warnings issued for four districts.

The northeast monsoon has intensified across various districts of Tamil Nadu. In the 24 hours leading up to yesterday morning, Nagapattinam recorded the highest rainfall of 19 cm, followed by 18 cm in Kodiyakarai and Velankanni.
The depression over the southern Bay of Bengal strengthened into a deep depression two days ago. As of yesterday morning, it was located 370 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 550 km south of Chennai.
This system is expected to intensify into a cyclone and move towards the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. As a result, isolated areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorms through December 3.
With the deep depression likely to intensify, the authorities have urged people in the affected regions to stay vigilant and follow safety precautions.
