Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, calling him a “defender” of “humanism and justice” and commending his role in fostering ties between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz, King Charles III among others paid tributes.
