Left political parties in Tamil Nadu on Sunday strongly condemned the United States’ recent military action and arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, calling it an illegal assault on a sovereign nation that violates international law and national sovereignty.CPM State Secretary P. Shanmugam described the arrest as an imperialist act aimed at subjugating Venezuela. He criticised the U.S. for allegedly using false accusations—including claims of drug trafficking—to justify intervention driven by corporate oil interests and alleged ideological opposition to Venezuela’s ties with Cuba.
Echoing Shanmugam’s remarks, CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian said Maduro enjoyed significant popular support after nationalising Venezuela’s oil resources, which had previously forced American companies out. He accused the U.S. of deploying warships and launching attacks to regain control of natural resources.
The Left parties urged the United Nations to intervene immediately, ensure the safety of President Maduro and his wife, and called on India and the international community to defend Venezuela’s democracy, sovereignty, and right to self-determination.
The reaction comes amid broader international criticism of the U.S. action, with calls from other political groups inside and outside India also denouncing the intervention as a violation of international law and expressing concern for regional stability.
