More than 9.14 lakh people have applied to have their names added to the voter list in Tamil Nadu during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Monday.

The spike in applications comes after a draft voter list was published on 19 December 2025, in which around 97 lakh names were removed due to various reasons such as relocation, death, or untraceability. Eligible citizens filed Form 6 applications to include their names, with submissions continuing through special camps and online channels.

Special camps were held in all 4,079 polling booths across 16 Assembly constituencies of Chennai district and similar drives took place statewide to assist voters in adding, deleting, or correcting entries. Families also submitted Form 7 to remove names of deceased relatives, with 13,457 such requests recorded.

The ECI has allowed a one‑month window for eligible voters to apply for inclusion, deletion, or corrections ahead of the final electoral roll publication, scheduled in February ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
