Redevelopment work at Chennai Central Railway Station is progressing swiftly under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at transforming railway stations with modern infrastructure, improved passenger amenities, and enhanced accessibility. The Southern Railway, after successfully renovating Parangimalai and Sulurpetta stations, is now intensifying efforts to modernise additional stations across the Chennai division, with a goal to complete four major station renovations by March next year.
Out of the 17 stations selected under the Amrit Bharat project, civil works are currently underway at Park, Guindy, Chennai Beach, and Guduvancheri stations. According to senior officials, most major civil works have already been completed, including the installation of lifts, while finishing touches such as new façades and roofing are ongoing at select locations.
At Park Railway Station, almost all upgrades have been finalised except for construction near Platform 1. Completed enhancements include new pedestrian pathways, modern ticket counters, upgraded toilets, and installation of lifts, aimed at improving passenger movement and comfort.
Simultaneously, renovation efforts are also in progress at Jolarpettai, Gummidipoondi, Tiruttani, Arakkonam, Tiruvallur, Ambattur, and Perambur stations. These upgrades focus on providing modern architectural façades, better crowd management, enhanced security features, and additional lifts and escalators.
The redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme places special emphasis on passenger convenience and accessibility, particularly for senior citizens and differently-abled commuters, ensuring smooth and safe movement across platforms. Once completed, these stations are expected to offer a modern, comfortable, and passenger-friendly travel experience for Chennai’s daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
