A new deposit refund scheme for empty liquor bottles will begin in Chennai from today, announced officials from the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC). Under the initiative, consumers purchasing liquor will pay an additional ₹10 deposit for each bottle, which can be claimed back when the empty bottle is returned.
The scheme aims to encourage recycling and reduce environmental waste by promoting the return of used liquor bottles. Customers are expected to bring back the empties to designated collection points to receive their deposit refund.
TASMAC officials said the programme is part of broader efforts to adopt eco-friendly practices and raise public awareness about responsible disposal of glass waste. The deposit will be displayed separately on bills, and refunds will be processed upon bottle verification at collection centres.
Consumers in Chennai will be able to benefit from the scheme once it becomes operational across liquor outlets and return points from today.
