Oscars: ‘Green Book’ adjudged best film, Malek, Olivia emerge winners


The 91st Academy Awards in Los Angeles saw Regina King taking home the first award – Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk. Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director for Roma, which also won Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography.

Best Picture, however, was taken by Green Book, which also won Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Original Screenplay.

Olivia Colman won Best Actress for playing Queen Anne in The Favourite, beating Glenn Close.

Rami Malek won Best Actor for his performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, which also won sound and editing awards.

Crowd favourite Black Panther scored wins for Best Original Score, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Shallow from A Star Is Born won Best Original Song, with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performing it live. The Guneet Monga-produced Period. End Of Sentence, set in India, won Best Documentary Short.

Two films lead the competition – Roma and The Favourite – both competing for Best Picture and other Oscars, have 10 nominations each.

The recipients of this year’s honorary Oscars are actress Cicely Tyson, composer Lalo Schifrin and publicist Marvin Levy while producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall receive the Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award.

The Oscars opened with a performance by Queen and Adam Lambert.

Controversy surrounded the Oscars this year. There was no host after Kevin Hart withdrew over homophobic tweets and there was a reversed decision to present four awards in commercial breaks.
