Construction begins on AIIMS Madurai


The construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai has officially commenced at Thoppur following the receipt of environmental clearance from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Tamil Nadu. This milestone was announced on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a significant healthcare project in the region.
The construction launch was celebrated with a ceremonial event attended by key officials from AIIMS and the construction firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The first phase of the project, which includes the medical college, hostels, outpatient department (OPD), inpatient department (IPD), emergency block, and other priority services, is slated for completion within 18 months. The entire project is expected to be finished in 33 months.
The total cost of the AIIMS Madurai project has been revised upwards from Rs 1977.80 crore to Rs 2021.51 crore. The facility will span a substantial built-up area of 2,31,782 square meters, encompassing 42 blocks. Once completed, AIIMS Madurai will house 900 beds, including a specialized 150-bed block for infectious diseases and a 30-bed AYUSH block. The AYUSH block is intended to integrate traditional Indian medical practices such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy with conventional medical care.
This project represents a significant investment in the healthcare infrastructure of Tamil Nadu and is expected to provide advanced medical services and education opportunities in the region. The AIIMS Madurai facility will enhance the availability of high-quality healthcare and medical education, promoting better health outcomes for the local population.
