Pakistan cancels Samjhauta Express, the rail link to India

Chennai: The Samjhauta Express that connects Pakistan’s Lahore city and Attari and New Delhi on the Indian side, scheduled to depart today at 8 am, has been cancelled.

The Pakistan Railways’ additional general manager announced the cancellation amidst escalating tension between the neighbours, says a report from across the border.

A day before Indian Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had announced that there was no plans to suspend the service.

“We have not yet received any instructions from authorities as far as running of Samjhauta Express is concerned. It will run as planned, as per the schedule,” he had said.

The latest development has led to many people being stranded on either side of the border. India has said it is taking efforts to send the passengers by bus.
