AIADMK slams DMK for inaction to solve rain issues

Former AIADMK minister and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, R B Udhayakumar, has launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK government after rainwater seeped into the recently-constructed Kalaignar Centenary Library in Madurai. Udhayakumar highlighted the structural issues in the library, questioning its durability and the government’s management of public facilities.
“Even a few hours of rain have rendered the library unfit for public use,” Udhayakumar stated on Tuesday. He pointed out that two sections of the library had to be shut down temporarily due to water ingress.
Criticizing Chief Minister M K Stalin, Udhayakumar questioned whether the CM would take immediate action to address the issue or listen to the concerns of Madurai residents affected by the heavy rains. He also brought attention to the conditions at the Mattuthavani flower and vegetable markets, which see over 10,000 visitors daily. The rain has exacerbated the sanitation problems there, with accumulated garbage and dirty water posing health risks to the public.
“The markets are now breeding grounds for diseases due to the rain. Piled-up garbage soaked in rainwater is creating a stink, and dirty sewage water flows nearby. People who come to shop for auspicious occasions are instead at risk of contracting diseases,” Udhayakumar warned.
He further criticized the DMK government’s portrayal of the Kalaignar Centenary Library as a significant achievement. “The so-called proud achievement of the DMK government has been exposed. There is picture proof of rainwater flooding two sections of the library, forcing their temporary closure,” Udhayakumar added.
