The Tamil Nadu government is set to announce revised fares for auto-rickshaws, a move awaited for 11 years. The last fare revision, implemented in 2013, fixed the base fare at ₹25 for the first 1.8 kilometers, ₹12 for each additional kilometer, and ₹3.50 as waiting charges for every five minutes. Night fares were allowed to be charged at double the daytime rate.
Since then, auto drivers and unions have been demanding a fare revision to reflect current economic conditions.
According to officials from the Tamil Nadu Transport Department:
The government is planning to replace digital meters with a dedicated mobile app to calculate fares.
Data on 1.7 lakh auto drivers has already been collected as part of the implementation process.
A proposal with the new fare structure has been sent to the state government, and an official announcement is expected soon.
This initiative aims to modernize the fare system and address long-standing demands from the auto-rickshaw unions.
