Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday launched an ambitious free laptop distribution programme aimed at digitally empowering college students and equipping them with tools to excel in the modern technology-driven world. The scheme is part of the government’s broader focus on education, skill development and inclusive growth.
The programme, titled “Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil”, plans to distribute 20 lakh laptops to students in government colleges and institutions across the state. In the first phase, 10 lakh laptops will be distributed to students pursuing courses in engineering, arts and science, medicine, agriculture, law, polytechnics and industrial training institutes.
Stalin described the initiative not as a mere giveaway but as a strategic investment in the future of youth, urging students to use the devices to enhance their skills, particularly in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). He emphasised that the laptops are meant to help students compete globally and contribute meaningfully to society.
To support advanced learning, the laptops—sourced from reputed brands like Dell, Acer and HP—will include modern specifications such as Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processors, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, and come pre-loaded with Windows 11 Home, BOSS Linux, MS Office 365, and a six-month free subscription to the AI-powered Perplexity Pro platform.
The state government has allocated ₹2,000 crore for the scheme in the current fiscal year, highlighting its priority on bridging the digital divide and fostering IT, coding, digital marketing, graphic design and AI-related skills among students.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin termed the scheme a potential game changer for youth empowerment, while officials reiterated that the initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu’s traditions of promoting scientific advancement and education for socio-economic progress.
