Bhubaneswar: At least five persons were killed and six others sustained injuries in a road accident in Odisha on Saturday, officials said.The accident occurred at Haldiapadar on National Highway-16 near Berhampur, when a truck travelling on the wrong side of the road rammed into three motorcycles. Four people died on the spot, while another victim succumbed to injuries later at a hospital.
The injured were rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where they are undergoing treatment. Police said the condition of some of the injured is serious.
The truck driver fled the scene after the accident but was later arrested. Police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the loss of lives and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and announced ex-gratia assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
