Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Saturday firmly dismissed speculation about a political tie-up between the Congress and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party led by actor-politician Vijay, ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media in Chennai, Selvaperunthagai clarified that no talks have taken place with TVK regarding an electoral alliance. When asked about reports of an offer from TVK on power-sharing or seat-sharing, he said that the Congress has not considered any such alliance and that its focus remains solely on negotiations with its long-time ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The TNCC chief also took a swipe at opposition claims that parties in the INDIA bloc might exit the coalition. He insisted that such suggestions were unfounded and that no party would leave the alliance, dismissing what he described as misleading promises from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Selvaperunthagai highlighted the enthusiastic response within the party, noting that more than 6,000 applications from aspiring candidates across the state had been received, signalling strong grassroots engagement ahead of the polls.
He also referenced a recent meeting between Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and DMK MP Kanimozhi, describing their interaction as cordial and positive, underlining the commitment to strengthen the existing alliance framework rather than exploring new partnerships.
Political analysts have noted ongoing speculation about potential realignments in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, especially after high-profile engagements between national and regional leaders. However, the TNCC leadership’s latest statement appears to reinforce its commitment to the INDIA bloc partnership led by the DMK for the upcoming elections.
