Chennaiites witnessed a surprise pour this morning and the climate remained humid and cloudy all day.

However, the Metereological Department confirmed the commencement of northeast monsoon with the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

After several failed predictions, this year’s monsoon is expected to hit the coastal zones of Tamilnadu in the coming week. Apparently, winds are noticed around the pressure area setting up the monsoon rains around 1 November.

The coastal areas of Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and some parts of Kerala will receive considerable amounts of rainfall by next week, according to the latest Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai.

A cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal extending till Sri Lanka was noticed by the met officials. Atmospheric pressure over the cyclone is getting stronger over 3.1 km above sea level.

This condition over the ocean likely to bring rainfall starting from 31 October which is expected to continue till 3 November, predicted the officers.

After this, another spell is expected to hit the city and other coastal regions with more intense rainfall between 5 and 7 November throwing a wet towel over Deepavali celebrations this year.
