Ensuring extra security, city Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan on Friday highlighted on the importance of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), while inaugurating such facilities at Valasaravakkam and Royal Nagar police jurisdictions.

The Valasaravakkam police, in fact, is lately campaigning in residential areas to promote installation of CCTV cameras.

Viswanathan launched 1,270 CCTVs and revealed that the department is working in tandem with the residents’ welfare associations and vendors to help proliferate the number of CCTVs in the city.

He said that there is a plan to instal a CCTV camera within every 50 metres radius in the city. The rise in violent crimes has lately prompted residents to go for CCTV cameras voluntarily for safety reasons. The police department is also wooing the residents to go for it, the Commissioner said.

The event came after the Madras High Court direction encouraging the installation of CCTVs. “On Thursday, the Madras High Court directed the Registrar of Cooperative Societies to submit a proposal for providing CCTV cameras in all public distribution system (PDS) outlets,” said Ramkumar, an advocate and a resident of Chinmaya Nagar.

Ramkumar further said, “Valasaravakkam and Virugambakkam have become biggest victims of chain snatching and robbery in recent days. The installation of CCTV cameras by the police is a welcome move. Residents can now walk freely as they are watched and taken care by CCTV cameras.”
