The Nerkundram Salai is a narrow stretch and witnesses heavy traffic. Authorities should take immediate steps to ease the vehicular movement, said Aswini, who uses this stretch to reach her office at Koyambedu.
People from Virugambakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Saligramam and Alapakkam use this way and so, traffic hold-ups are a regular feature during peak hours.
Civic body and traffic police should initiate action to make Nerkundram Salai a one-way route as it was done some time back, said Sekar, a resident.
The road is ill-equipped to handle the heavy traffic and many a time accidents occur, said Radhai, an advocate.
The road was previously a one-way route was was made into a two-way stretch to facilitate Metro rail work. Now, work is over and it can be restored to one-way for smooth flow of vehicles, she suggested.
Residents said they are left with no other option but to use Nerkundram Salai, because there is flyover construction work happening on Jawaharlal Nehru Main Road.
Another reason for traffic congestion is the proximity of this road to Koyambedu, said Sheela, another resident. When contacted, a traffic police at the spot said steps will be taken to decongest the road.
