COVID-19 death toll in India rises to 109, number of cases to 4,000

Chennai: The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in the country climbed to nearly 4,000 today, while the death toll rose to 109, according to Union Health Ministry sources. As many as 291 people were cured of the disease and discharged, it said.

Maharashtra leads the country with maximum number of cases, Tamilnadu stands second while Delhi is at the third spot.

The Health Ministry’s figures stood at 3,959 yesterday with the number of deaths at 83. The chunk of cases in India have been linked to the religious gathering at Nizamuddin, links to which have been traced across 17 States so far.

Meanwhile, India nears the end of the second week of the lockdown, imposed nationwide for three weeks to fight the Covid-19 crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for 9 PM 9 Minutes went off well without any disruption in the electricity grid after the government and utilities put in place elaborate plans to deal with the sudden drop and then a quick spurt in demand.

People including eminent personalities from different sectors participated in the event by lighting diyas, candles and torchlights to show solidarity as the country remain faced with Coronavirus pandemic.
