Chennai: Thirumazhisai, which has emerged as the new wholesale vegetables and fruits hub of Chennai, after the Koyambedu market was shifted here to prevent further spread of Covid-19, has witnessed sales of Rs 1.50 crore worth vegetables so far.
Accordng to sources, 3,000 tonnes of vegetables have been sold and 3,500 tonnes of farm products from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and other parts of the country reached the market.
It is also learnt that vegetable prices, which witnessed an increase in the past few days due to closure of Koyambedu market, has come down following the opening of Thirumazhisai market.
A bullet in issued by the Health and Family Welfare department said most numbers of cases were linked to Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market, with 669 reported from 19 districts, as the total cases surged to 7,204.
In fact more than 3,000 positive cases were reported in the last six days alone–due to increased testing–when compared to 4,058 cases on 5 May.
