Chennai: Amid the coronavirus scare, there was some political action in store today, after senior DMK leader R S Bharathi was arrested this morning, for a speech that he made at an event some months ago.
Though he was released on bail within hours, his arrest led to charges and counter-charges in political arena.
AIADMK MLA Semmalai said that Bharathi was not arrested due to political vendetta. He said action was taken based on a complaint filed earlier. “Everyone is equal before law. Politicians should think twice before they speak,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Bharathi was arrested for his remarks against judges and SC community during a meeting organised by DMK youth wing at Anbagam. The complaint was filef by Aadhi Tamilar Makkal Katchi founder Kalyana Sundaram. Bharathi was arrested at his house and was taken to a hospital for medical check-up.
He said that he was arrested because he spoke against thr corruption in distrubtion of coronavirus relief materials.
“My speech made during the meeting at Anbagam was twisted and released in social media,” he said. Meanwhile sources said Bharathi was given interim bail till 1 June.
The next hearing of the case has been adjourned to 31 May. Condemning the arrest of Bharathi, DMK president M K Stalin said the action has been taken to divert the inability of the AIADMK government.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader H Raja in a tweet welcomed the arrest of Bharathi and also asked if Dhayanidhi Maran was in waiting list.
