Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu on May 30, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the state. Shah’s itinerary includes a stop in Madurai, where he will have a darshan at the Meenakshi Amman Temple along with his family. Later in the day, he will travel to Thirumayam in Pudukkottai district to visit the Kottai Bhairavar Temple.
Shah’s visit to Thirumayam was initially planned for April but was postponed for various reasons. His presence in Tamil Nadu is expected to draw significant attention, given the backdrop of political tensions and planned protests by local outfits.
The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) has announced a protest in Madurai to coincide with Shah’s visit. The demonstration aims to condemn Prime Minister Modi’s remarks about Tamils made during the Lok Sabha election campaign in Odisha. TPDK General Secretary Ramakrishnan confirmed the protest, highlighting ongoing grievances with the central government’s stance towards Tamil issues.
In anticipation of Shah’s visit and the potential for unrest, police forces are implementing extensive security measures in both Madurai and Pudukkottai districts. Authorities are keen to ensure that the Home Minister’s visit proceeds smoothly without any incidents.
Amit Shah’s visit is seen as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) broader strategy to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu, a state where the party has historically struggled to make significant inroads.
