The landslide occurred in the early hours in the Mundakkai and Sooralmalai areas, where tea estates and tourist spots are located. The torrential downpour caused a flash flood in the mountain streams, leading to the landslide that swept away homes and buried entire villages.
In response to the ongoing crisis, a red alert has been issued for Wayanad and seven other districts in Kerala. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rains, heightening the risk of additional landslides in the region. Authorities have urged people to stay away from vulnerable areas and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan is scheduled to visit the affected areas in Wayanad today to assess the situation firsthand. His visit comes as the state government intensifies relief efforts, coordinating with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies to provide aid to those affected by the disaster.
