The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started the formal process for conducting the Vice-Presidential election. This follows the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 22 due to health reasons. As part of the preparations, the ECI has finalized the list of members who will make up the Electoral College. This includes all elected and nominated members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The Vice-President is elected through a secret ballot by this group using the system of proportional representation through a single transferable vote.
The Commission has also begun steps such as appointing Returning Officers, preparing nomination forms, and creating a guidebook to explain the process. This guidebook is meant to help voters and the public understand how the election works, including who can stand for election, how nominations are filed, and how votes are counted.
The schedule for the election will be announced soon, and all procedures will be carried out in line with the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act.
