Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stepped up its inquiry into the tragic Karur stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, during an election rally organized by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The incident claimed 41 lives and left over 110 injured, prompting the Supreme Court to order an independent investigation to ensure a fair and impartial probe.On Monday, key TVK functionaries, including General Secretary N. Anand, Election Campaign Management General Secretary Adhav Arjuna, Karur District Secretary V.P. Mathiyazhagan, and Karur City functionary M.C. Pounraj appeared before CBI officials at the PWD circuit house within the Karur District Collectorate campus. The officers have intensified their investigation over the past month, conducting extensive questioning of organizers, police officers, eyewitnesses, and affected families.
The CBI is meticulously examining alleged lapses in crowd control and event management that potentially contributed to the deadly crush. They are also investigating the roles and responsibilities of officials who sanctioned the gathering, including the Karur City Police Inspector who granted permission for the event.
Over 300 individuals have been summoned so far for questioning, including TVK office-bearers and relatives of the deceased and injured.
