The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly’s first session of the year 2026 will begin on January 20 at 9:30 AM, announced Assembly Speaker M. Appavu on Friday. The session, marking the start of the state’s political calendar ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly elections, will be held with all customary legislative formalities in place.
According to the official statement, the Assembly will convene in full ceremonial order, with Governor R.N. Ravi delivering the customary address to the House as mandated under constitutional provisions. Speaker Appavu emphasised that legislative traditions will be upheld, and expressed confidence that the Governor’s address will reflect the dignity of the institution.
The January session is expected to set the tone for the year, with key policy discussions, government performance reviews, and preparations for the upcoming state elections anticipated to dominate the agenda. Political parties across the spectrum are already mobilising their strategies, making the session an important platform for early campaign narratives.
