Chennai, Nov 6:

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 3,500 crore to construct 70,000 pucca concrete houses across rural areas during 2026-27 under the first phase of the ‘Vetri Veedu’ housing scheme.

According to a Government Order issued by Rural Development Secretary Dharmendra Pratap Yadav, the scheme provides financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh per beneficiary to construct houses measuring between 360 and 500 sq ft, fitted with RCC roofs and dedicated kitchen spaces. The assistance will be credited directly to beneficiary bank accounts across four milestones: foundation, lintel, roofing, and overall completion. An additional Rs 12,000 will be provided for toilet construction where required.

Eligibility is capped at an annual household income of Rs 2.5 lakh, prioritizing widows, destitute women, transpersons, and ex-servicemen, with a 40% quota earmarked for SC/ST beneficiaries. Beneficiaries can also secure bank credit of up to Rs 1 lakh with a 3% interest subsidy for timely repayments over a 15-year period.
