New Delhi: Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm today amid sloganeering and protests by members from the AIADMK, Congress and TDP over issues including construction of Mekedatu dam, Rafale deal, among others.
The AIADMK members protested against the construction of a dam across the Cauvery river, while those from the Congress demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Rafale deal. The TDP sought to raise issues related to Andhra Pradesh.
As soon as the House met, members from the three parties trooped into the well of the House, holding placards and later started shouting slogans. More than 40 members were in the well of the House.
Some members from the ruling BJP also sought to raise certain issues from their seats.
A little over 10 minutes into question hour, where one question and various supplementaries were taken up, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the proceedings till 2 pm following vociferous protests.
Question Hour in the Lok Sabha has been disrupted for the sixth consecutive day due to protests over various issues. The winter session of Parliament began 11 December.
The proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were washed out for the seventh day after the Opposition and treasury benches clashed over these issues.
Tamil parties protested over the Cauvery issue. As the slogan shouting from both sides continued, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said, “It is very clear that none of you wants the House to run.”
“I don’t want this (ruckus) to be seen by the people,” he said, while adjourning the proceedings for the day.
