Relatives attack hospital after patient’s death in Chennai


Chennai: The family members of a patient who died under mysterious circumstances vandalised a hospital in Thiruvotriyur High Road last night.

According to the police, Baskar (41), who worked on a contract basis with Chennai Corporation as a mosquito fogging staff, died at the hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

The incident took place at a private hospital, J K Hospital, at Thiruvotriyur High Road, New Washermenpet.

Baskar, an alcoholic, was admitted with a damaged pancreas. For the past three days he complained of severe stomach pain and had been coming daily to the hospital to take medicines and drips.

Yesterday, he came to the hospital at 7.30 pm, the doctor was not present in the hospital. The duty nurse asked him over phone about the treatment and she allegedly went by what the doctor said.

After some time, Baskar, who being administered drips, was found unconscious and his body went cold. He was declared dead by the doctor who arrived at the hospital at 8.30 pm.

Baskar’s family alleged that he passed away due to wrong treatment at the hospital. Around 30-40 persons protested on the road outside the hospital and hurled stones at the building, damaging its glass panels. The police who arrived at the spot brought the situation under control.

The body of Baskar, who was a member of the DMK, was sent to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem. The police said the cause of death can be established only after the post-mortem.

The hospital refused to comment on the incident.
