Vellore: “Since 15 years, we have been undertaking measures to improve the quality of education offered in State-owned schools across Vellore and make it a ‘model’ district. Development can be seen only when government employees educate their children in such institutions,” said VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan.
He was speaking at a function organised to distribute the Universal Higher Education Trust (UHET) scholarship at the Vellore campus Monday. A total of 1,125 students received the scholarships worth Rs 66 lakh.
“Government provides free education, however not many prefer studying in State-owned schools and seek admission in private counterparts. The quality of education will go up when the authorities enhance the infrastructure and raise the standard in schools or should provide financial support to private schools students,” Viswanathan said.
Speaking about the scholarship, he said, “5,141 needy students with poor economic background, of which 66 per cent are girls, were benefited through UHET since its inception. This being the seventh year of operation, it has been a role model for the country in providing higher education to the needy students.”
