Covid-19 cases to reach 2 lakh in TN by October?

Chennai: A statement made by the Tamilnadu government in the Madras High Court has sent shock waves among people of the State, who are already suffering from the impact of Covid-19.

For, when a plea against conducting class 10 public exams came up for hearing, a bench of the Madras High Court questioned the Tamilnadu government and said that when the State government has not decided to open schools and colleges until Covid-19 situation subsides, how can 9 lakh students, 2 lakh teachers and thousands of non-teaching staff be forced to risk their lives attending class 10 board exams from 15 June.

To this, Advocate General Vijay Narayan said that this was the ideal time for conducting exams since the coronavirus cases are likely to increase in the state.

He said that all precautionary measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 while conducting the Class 10 exams are already in place. Narayan also said that cases can increase up to 2 lakh by October and November and hence the government would like to conduct the exams now.

“If the government’s expectation itself is 2 lakh, then one could easily imagine what would be the ground reality. It is clear that Covid-19 is spreading rapidly and time for some strong action,” said Palani of Saidapet.

According to a retired doctor, stringent norms should be in place in north Chennai, which is witnessing a constant rise in coronavirus infections.
