Palani shootout: One dies, another critical

Chennai: One of the two persons, who were shot at by a theatre owner in the temple town of Palani in Dindigul district of Tamilnadu yesterday, succumbed to bullet wounds today.

Sources said Subramani, who suffered bullet wounds along with his relative Palanisami, succumbed at the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, where he was shifted for advanced treatment.

Though an emergency surgery was performed and the bullet was removed, it has caused enough damage to the blood vessels resulting in his death.

In a daring broad daylight act, the duo were shot at and injured by theatre owner Natarajan following a land boundary dispute yesterday morning.

The octogenarian theatre owner has a running feud with a farmer, Elangovan, who owns a 12 cent vacant land adjacent to the former’s property.

When Elangovan and his relatives Palanisami and Subramani came to the site to fence the property, Natarajan objected to it, leading to a verbal duel.

Amid the heated altercations, Natarajan suddenly took out his licensed gun and opened fire against the trio, in which Subramani and Palanisami sustained bullet injuries.

Soon after the incident Natarajan fled the scene.

Police registered cases under various sections of the IPC, including 307 (attempt to murder) against Natarajan, who was later arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Following the death of Subramani, police altered it as a case of murder today.
