Amit Shah meets Punjab CM ahead of talks with farmers

Chennai: As farmer protests intensify across the National capital, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is meeting Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today.

Later in the day, the protesting farmers too will be meeting with the officials for the fourth time, with no solution brought about last time.

Amarinder Singh is expected to give his suggestions to ease the ongoing tension with a section of leaders in the Congress Party wary of the turn the agitation may take if prolonged too much.

Earlier, the farmers’ representatives had unanimously turned down the Centre’s proposal of a special committee to thrash out the differences and resolve concerns over the farm laws.

They have also warned that today is the ‘last chance’ for the government to take a decision on the laws. In place of a committee, they have demanded a special session of Parliament to repeal the laws.

Also, Amit Shah is said to have held two meetings with Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar earlier. Some reports have quoted a couple of farmer leaders as saying that they received a telephone call from Amit Shah expressing the government’s readiness for talks.
