Chennai: The Supreme Court today informed the Centre not to undertake any construction or demolition for the Central Vista Project, till the verdict related to it is delivered.

The apex court said, “You can lay the foundation stone, you can carry on paperwork, but no construction or demolition, no cutting down any trees”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for the new Parliament building on 10 December.

Construction of the new establishment is expected to be completed by 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 971 crore.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has said the new Parliament building will be earthquake resistant and a total of 2,000 people will be directly involved in the construction of the new building and 9,000 indirectly.

The existing Parliament building will be conserved as it is an archaeological asset of the country, the government has said.
