Chennai: Further hardening their stance, farmer unions protesting at Delhi’s borders, have commenced a relay hunger strike, asking the Centre to repeal the recently-enacted farm laws.
Speaking to reporters at the Singhu Border on Sunday evening, Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav said, ‘We have decided to start a 24-hour relay hunger strike, starting Monday, at all the protest sites in Delhi as part of our ongoing agitation. At least 11 people will sit on strike at a time. We request farmers protesting in different parts of the country to also join us’.
The strike comes days after Prime Minister Modi addressed a section of the farmers via a video, appealing them to end their agitation.
Home Minister Amit Shah too said that Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar is likely to hold talks with the protesting groups in a day or two to discuss their demands.
Also on Sunday morning, Modi made a surprise visit to Gurudwara Rakab Ganj and paid tributes to Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh guru.
Farmer leader Jagjeet Singh Dalewala said farmers will not allow toll collection on highways in Haryana from 25-27 December.
