Chennai: The Election Commission of  India  is gearing up for upcoming Assembly polls in Tamilnadu.

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash has stated that as many as 6123 polling stations will be set up in the limits of Greater Chennai Corporation.  Inspection of EVMs will be held in Thiruvallur and other places, it is said.

Also, for the first time, the Election Commission will be delivering voter ID cards through the postal department.

To review poll preparedness in Tamilnadu, a top team from the EC headed by the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora will visit Chennai on 10 and 11 February.

According to sources, they will meet political parties, hold meeting with top officials and enforcement agencies, besides meeting senior officers of the government headed by Chief Secretary during the course of two days.

The Election Commission recently said strict surveillance will be in place and comprehensive preparations will be carried out to make the election ‘influence-and inducement-free.’

A high-level delegation led by Secretary General Umesh Sinha landed in Chennai in December on a two-day visit to review the State’s preparedness for the Assembly polls, due in April-May 2021.

The Commission said Covid-19 precautions that were followed in Bihar elections and by-elections in various States will be replicated in Tamilnadu.

With Tamilnadu notorious for the misuse of money during elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to make the 2021 Assembly elections in the state free from the influence of money, freebies and liquor.

“The Commission will come down heavily on those who try to influence voters,” Umesh Sinha said.
