India’s Covid spread at its worst, officials express fear

Chennai: India added 103,796 cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, breaching the peak of 99,181 seen in a single day during the first wave of the pandemic last September.

As the outbreak continued a relentless expansion, officials express fear over the consequences.

The rapid spread of Covid-19 finally forced the Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra to announce lockdown-like restrictions across the State from 8 pm on Monday. On weekends, a complete lockdown will be imposed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a review meeting with high-level officials to review the recent rise in coronavirus cases as well as the nationwide vaccination drive on Sunday, asked central teams to visit Maharashtra and review the reasons for such a spike.

The Madhya Pradesh government has said that it will restrict the movement of people from neighbouring Chhattisgarh to curb the spread of Covid-19 and a lockdown will be enforced in isolated areas whenever needed.

“The Prime Minister directed that central teams consisting of public health specialists and clinicians be sent to Maharashtra in view of high case load and deaths, and likewise to Punjab and Chhattisgarh because of the disproportionate number of deaths being reported there,” said an official statement.
